GHNP Trekking Guide — Great Himalayan National Park from Tirthan Valley
Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Covering over 1,700 sq km of the Western Himalayas, it is home to snow leopards, brown bears, blue sheep, and over 375 species of birds. The Tirthan Valley entry at Gushaini is the most accessible gateway.
Entry and Permits
Entry requires a permit from the GHNP office at Sai Ropa, near Gushaini. A certified GHNP guide is mandatory. Entry fees are nominal for Indian nationals. No camping with outside equipment is allowed in the core zone.
Best Treks from Tirthan Entry
Rolla Trek (1–2 days)
Most popular introductory trek. The trail follows the Tirthan River through dense forest. Rolla is a GHNP campsite. Ideal for first-timers.
Pundrik Lake (3–4 days)
More demanding. Ascends through alpine meadows to a high-altitude lake. Wildlife sightings more likely. Snow possible even in May.
Rakti Thatch (2 days)
Moderately challenging. Rhododendron forests to open pastures at elevation with views of surrounding peaks.
Best Season
April to June and September to November. July-August is monsoon — trails become inaccessible. Winter sees heavy snowfall above 2,500 metres.
What to Carry
Trekking shoes, warm layers, rain cover, water purification, personal medical kit, snacks, camera, and binoculars for wildlife.
