15 Things to Do in Tirthan Valley — The Complete 2026 Guide

Updated September 2026  ·  8 min read  ·  By Tiraya Team

Tirthan Valley sits in Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, at about 1,600 metres, beside the Great Himalayan National Park. It rewards slow travel. Here are 15 things that make it special.

1. See a River That Will Never Be Dammed

The Tirthan is protected as a free-flowing river: no dams or hydropower projects can be built on it. It rises from a sacred spring near Hanskund Peak (about 4,800 m) and joins the Beas at Larji.

2. Trout Fishing

The Tirthan is an angling reserve known for brown and rainbow trout. You need a fishing licence from the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department; ask us and we will point you to the right office. Catch and release is encouraged.

3. Walk to the GHNP Gate

From Gushaini (10 minutes from Tiraya) a riverside trail runs about 8–9 km to the Great Himalayan National Park gate at Rolla. No permit is needed for this walk.

4. Trek into the Great Himalayan National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Multi-day treks into the core zone need a permit from the Sai Ropa office and a registered guide.

5. Birdwatching

GHNP has recorded around 181 bird species. Look for the Himalayan monal and, with luck, the rare Western Tragopan, Himachal's state bird. Early mornings are best.

6. Shringa Rishi Temple

Near Bagi village, the temple of Shringa Rishi, one of the eighteen chief deities of Kullu and the most important deity of the Tirthan and Jibhi valleys. Linked in legend to the Ramayana.

7. Chehni Kothi

A tall stone-and-timber tower in Chehni village (about 2,145 m), built in the traditional Kath-Kuni style. A short uphill walk from the Shringa Rishi temple side.

8. Jalori Pass

At about 3,120 metres, with wide views of the ranges. The pass usually closes from December to around mid-March because of snow.

9. Serolsar Lake

A 5–6 km forest walk from Jalori Pass to a small lake at about 3,100 m, with the temple of Budhi Nagin on its shore. Best March to November.

10. Jibhi

About 45 minutes to an hour from Tiraya. Visit the Jibhi waterfall and the wooden houses of the village.

11. Village Walks

Walk through Nagladi, Gushaini and Ropa. Notice the carved wooden houses, apple orchards and terraced fields.

12. Stargazing

Far from city lights, the valley has deep, clear night skies, especially in October and November. Tiraya has a dedicated Star Gazing Room for movie and game nights.

13. Local Festivals

Village deities, music and processions are part of valley life. Kullu Dussehra in October is the big one in the district.

14. Himachali Food

Try siddu, dham and local trout. At Tiraya's Terrace Café, breakfast with river views is a ritual worth planning around.

15. Do Nothing

Sit on your balcony. Listen to the river. Tirthan is best at its own pace.
